It's that time of year again
I love Christmas. Family and friends taking the time to get together in the comfort of summer days, but I just can’t fathom some of the ridiculous imagery we still hang on to, year after year. Surely Santa changes into a pair of thongs and a singlet when he’s south of the equator, how come we never see him depicted as such? If it’s snowing outside and you are desperate to bring some colour inside, then I can understand, but there is no excuse for decking the halls with boughs of plastic holly. As for spraying fake snow around the windows when it’s forty degrees outside, I can only assume it is some kind of delerium caused by using aerosols in confined spaces!
There are a ton of northern hemisphere traditions and conventions that have been employed without any sort of interview or selection process, Christmas just seems to attract the worst of them. Like serving red wines at room temperature. This is fine if the French chateau you call home is an ambient 14 degrees, but not so good if a humid Adelaide bar has just stung you ten bucks for a glass of liquid fire.
TIP: Aussie reds become flabby and their spice characters are overwhelmingly abrasive above 18 degrees. Don’t be afraid to give reds a quick chill to tighten them up, a lighter bodied red will reward you right down to 10 degrees. |
